Colorectal Cancer Prevention

Colon carcinoma is the third most common cancer in both men and women. In terms of numbers, approximately 500’000 new cases are recorded in Europe each year.

Lifestyle, genetic factors and diet are among the risk factors for the development of colon cancer.
The risk of developing colon cancer increases with age, and most diagnosed cases occur in individuals over 50 years of age. However, for reasons still unclear, in recent years, there has been an increase in the incidence among younger individuals individuals.

A colonoscopy is the best exam available to prevent colon cancer.

Early diagnosis is crucial to reduce mortality. Due to the increase in cases of colon cancer in younger patients, the American Gastroenterological Association (ACG) updated its guidelines, recommending the first screening colonoscopy starting at age 45 or age 40 in patients with a family history of colon cancer.

At our practice, colonoscopies are performed under sedation with propofol, making them completely painless. The exam is recognised and covered by health insurance (except for the deductible). If you have supplementary insurance, most insurers recognise colonoscopy as a preventive measure (please check the terms directly with your insurer).
